When I was young, I thought one should never explain one’s poetry. Close reading and careful attention should do the trick, especially since poets usually don’t know what they’re doing, at least in a way that non- and unsympathetic poets would understand. Over time, I became aware that that won’t do, even if you don’t know how your poetry works. All I can say about the poems on this blog, most of which have not been published, is that they are less concerned with being accessible, than they are about playing with the ineffable. My poetic education was “syncretistic,” drawing on models as various as the English Metaphysicals, Sufi mystics, French Symbolists, Hungarian transcendentalists, great rock psychedelisists like Jimi Hendrix, and jazz rhythms.
