the last one left alive

I know everybody in this town,
From school, and work, and running ’round,
Every mother, every mother’s child,
From baby’s first dreaming to running wild.
But now not one can meet my eye,
They see me coming and they pass me by,
I don’t know how I survived,
But I’m the last one in this town left alive.

Screens flicker and light the ruins.
Babies crying in empty rooms.
Kids sleeping off their daily binges.
The riverbank glitters with old syringes.
This man who once stood so proud,
If he shook my hand now he’d vanish like a cloud.
I don’t know what it takes to survive
But I’m the last one in this town left alive.

I stuck around to see it through,
To see if the gods might make them all come to.
I can no longer count the cost
Of good friends gone and lovers lost.
I’ve been loyal to a fault,
But now big men plow our earth with salt.
Turn the key and shift to drive,
Now there’s no one in this town left alive.
